Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are all the motorcycles Goldwings?
    • No, all brands are welcome but we can only use a limited number of trikes or sidecars
  • Do I need to bring an extra helmet?
    • Not always but if you have one it is a good idea. Most of the officials have their own helmets but media and VIPs do not.
  • We are having a triathlon and need motorcycles to work the race. Can you come and help us?
    • Sometimes, we have a pretty full schedule that is beyond what is listed here. If you are interested in having us come to your event please contact us..
  • Is this a part of CMA?
    • No, while many who ride with us are CMA members and several held or hold positions of chapter leadership with CMA chapters, this is not an CMA sanctioned group.
  • Who really rides the Purple Wing?
    • Team Leader Harry Stone rides the "metallic magenta" 2004 Gold Wing at every event. After 5 years and nearly 100 races the wing has performed flawlessly and has been specially prepared to work these type of events.
  • What time of day are the races?
    • For all the Triathlons we gather at 7:00 am and most are done within 2-3 hours depending on the length of the individual event The Age Group Championships starts at 6:30 am.
  • What if it rains?
    • The races happen even in the rain. We look at each race when it rains and alter what we do to be safe. Races do not cancel for rain but we modify our riding depending on the course and the severity of the weather.
  • What do the officials do while they ride with us?
    • They watch for rules violations during the event. Those cover a number of areas but they are looking for the racers to work within the rules. Infractions are written down by the official.
  • Can I bring my motorcycle with a sidecar or my trike?
    • If you have a sidecar or a trike please contact us ahead of any race. We can use a sidecar or a trike at some events and not at others. The width of the roads the race is held on and the amount traffic are just a few factors in the use of trikes and sidecars. There are also regulations limiting sidecars and trikes. For 2009 we are strictly limiting trikes and sidecars. Our designated last place and media transport motos are both trikes.
  • Can I bring my spouse along?
    • In past years we have allowed a passenger but insurance regulations from the sanctioning body now require permission from the race director for passenger approval. We ask you not ride a passenger. If your spouse or child over 14 wishes to come with you we can arrange for them to volunteer at the race and get a completely different experience.
  • How fast do the bicycles go?
    • The speed of a bicycle is affected by gravity and the power of its rider. While many are 5 mph or less up a hill it is not unusual to see a racer attain speeds over 50 mph down a long hill.
  • Can I ride my scooter?
    • The answer is maybe. We allow and encourage scooters that are street legal and able to run at freeway speeds. Contact us!
  • Do I have to provide my own reflective vest?
    • While we offer reflective vests in our store you are not required to buy one. We will provide you with a vest prior to the event.
  • What if we get hungry or thirsty?
    • We feed you at every event. Water and sports drinks are available as well.
  • Can I smoke while riding in the race?
    • We ask that you refrain from tobacco use while at the event. The smell of a cigarette can be a distraction to a racer.
  • What do the officials expect from us while we ride them?
    • If you transport an official you will meet with them before the race and discuss what they need. While the official tells you where to go and how long to stay on the course, you as the operator of the motorcycle are in charge of its safe operation.
  • What role does the motorcycles/rider perform?
    • If you transport a photographer you will get the oppurtunity to see almost every compeitotor and travel the course more than once. "Moto Photo" as we call it is probaly the most fun outside of the "Lead Moto" job. Lead Moto lead the first racer onto the course. Safety motos ride near the racers and watch for hazards and keep traffic away from racers. The "Follow Moto" or designated last place moto follows the last compeititor around the course. There are many jobs we perform during a race and each one can be fun and fufilling. You can read more about what we do on the Volunteer page.
  • Will I get an event T-shirt?
    • In most cases we give shirts to each motorcycle volunteer who comes to work the event. If you need a 2XL shirt or larger we need 3 weeks lead time to order one for you. We try to have shirts for everyone but we often run out of larger sizes. There just aren't many 2XL triathletes.
